It’s my only opera, so it’s an important part of my catalogue!
What was the context of the commission?
I had already written vocal music for Pauline Vaillancourt (Les grandes fontaines by Anne Hébert), so she reached out to me to put these Rilke poems to music.
What were the main challenges?
The world of opera overwhelms me a bit. Luckily, Pauline was there to help me navigate these troubled waters.
What did you think of the result?
I was very happy with it. The music fit well with the set, the staging.
